New Players
Q: What do I do on my first visit?
A: Welcome! When you arrive, you’ll:
- Sign in and complete your waiver.
- Go through Kit Check.
- Have your weapons checked (if you’re fighting).
- Receive a site tour from our Player Success Team.
- Complete a Combat Safety Assessment (CSA) if you plan to fight.
We’ll guide you through everything.
Q: What time should I arrive?
A: Pre-mission roleplay begins at 3:00 PM. We recommend arriving between 12:00 PM and 2:00 PM to give yourself plenty of time to check in, get into costume, and meet people. Gatehouse closes for sign-in at 5:00 PM.
Q: What if I don’t have costuming or weapons?
A: No problem! Our Costume Library is open 3-5pm before each mission. You can borrow costumes and weapons for the day and simply return them before you leave.
Q: I’m not a great actor. How can I get better?
A: The best way to improve is simply to jump in and play. Don’t be afraid to join conversations, ask questions, and see where the story takes you. You might be surprised by how quickly you find your character.
Outside of the game, don’t hesitate to chat with other players. Most people are happy to share how they developed their characters, stay in character, and build memorable roleplay. Medieval Chaos has a very welcoming community, and everyone was new once.
Combat
Q: Do I have to fight?
A: Nope! You can play as a Non-Com (Non-Combatant). You’ll wear an orange sash that tells everyone you’re not participating in combat.
Q: What if I want to fight?
A: You’ll need an approved weapon and must complete a Combat Safety Assessment (CSA) on your first day.
Q: What is a CSA?
A: A Combat Safety Assessment is a short lesson where one of our Player Success Team members teaches you the basics of safe combat. You’ll practice in a one-on-one sparring session to make sure you’re comfortable before joining the game.
Q: Can I be attacked while walking to the washroom?
A: Everything past Gatehouse is considered in character, so you may encounter roleplay or combat along the way. That said, going to the washroom is an out-of-character need. Simply let people know you’re stepping out if necessary.
Characters
Q: How do I register a character?
A: Email advancementmc@gmail.com, and our Advancement Team will help you get started.
Q: Where can I see my character information and Advancement Points?
A: Visit the Medieval Chaos website. Your character information, Advancement Points, and progression are all available there.
Q: I haven’t played in years. How do I come back?
A: Start by emailing advancementmc@gmail.com. We’ll help update your character and connect you with our Player Success Team for a refresher.
Q: How do my character abilities work?
A: The Rulebook is the best place to start. If you still have questions, our Rules Officer is always happy to help.
NPCs & Story
Q: What is an NPC?
A: NPC stands for Non-Player Character. NPCs help bring our stories to life. Each Game Master recruits players to portray monsters, villains, townsfolk, and other important characters. Some NPCs are recurring, while others appear for just one event.
Q: How do I know whether I should play an NPC or play my own character?
A: During the off-season, players have the opportunity to dedicate themselves to an Arc as either a Player Character (PC) or an NPC (Non-Player Character). If you haven’t dedicated yourself to an Arc, you may be asked at Gatehouse to join the NPC team to help balance the day’s numbers.
We encourage players to split their time between playing their own character and NPCing throughout the season. If a Game Master needs extra NPCs, they’ll usually post a request on that event’s Facebook page before game day.
Q: I want to come out more, but I feel like I miss so much. How can I keep up with the story?
A: There are lots of ways to stay in the loop! The best source is talking with other players while you’re on the field. You can also read The Howler(when available), follow the official Medieval Chaos Facebook page, or ask questions in the MC Community Facebook group.
If you’re part of a Kingdom, you’ll often receive updates and reports on what’s happening in the world, making it one of the best ways to stay connected between events.
General
Q: How do I see upcoming events?
A: A season calendar is available on the Medieval Chaos website. For detailed information about each event, including story hooks, schedules, and NPC opportunities, visit the official Medieval Chaos Productions Facebook page.
Q: Why isn’t there music in Dagger Deep?
A: Who says there isn’t? While some nights are quieter than others, music is always welcome in Dagger Deep. Singing, storytelling, and playing instruments are encouraged, especially around the C&A Tavern, and we even have character abilities built around music.
To help maintain the medieval atmosphere, all music is performed live by players. Recorded music isn’t used (it’s hard to make a boom box fit the setting!), so if you’re musically inclined, we’d love to have you join the bards. Just remember that you’re outdoors and combat can happen nearby, so leave delicate or valuable instruments at home.
Families
Q: Can kids come to Medieval Chaos?
A: The minimum age to participate in Medieval Chaos as a player is 19.
However, we host several family-friendly tournaments, festivals, and Kingdom Days throughout the season that are open to spectators of all ages. These events are a great opportunity to bring the family, explore the immersive village of Dagger Deep, meet the community, watch the action, and see what Medieval Chaos is all about before joining the adventure as a player.
Venue
Q: Is there water on site?
A: Yes! We have water refill stations at both Gatehouse and Ye Old Cock & Ass Tavern. Please bring your own reusable goblet, mug, or water bottle to help reduce waste and cleanup.
Q: Is there food on site?
A: Sometimes! The C&A Tavern always offers simple grab-and-go snacks (these can be purchased with in-game currency), and many events feature independent food vendors serving meals such as burgers or other hot food. These vendors operate separately from Medieval Chaos but do carry FoodSafe certification.
We still recommend bringing some food with you, just in case a vendor isn’t operating that day. If you have food allergies or dietary restrictions, bringing your own meals is the safest option.
Q: How accessible is the site?
A: Dagger Deep is a rugged, off-grid wilderness venue. We’ve welcomed players using mobility scooters during the drier months and have had a few visitors in wheelchairs, but the gravel roads, uneven ground, and natural terrain can be challenging, even for able-bodied guests.
To help you decide if the site is a good fit for your needs, we’ve posted photos in our Venue Accessibility album. While we continue to improve accessibility where we can, the nature of the property means it won’t be suitable for everyone.
Q: Can I bring my pet or service animal?
A: Unfortunately, no. Due to the nature of our events, we cannot safely accommodate pets or service animals on site.
Q: Where can I smoke or vape?
A: Smoking and vaping are only permitted in two designated locations:
- The IC Smoke Pit in town.
- Cedric’s Pass, just past the Seacan.
Cannabis is only permitted at Cedric’s Pass.
Q: Can I bring my own alcohol?
A: No. Outside alcohol is never permitted. Alcohol is only available during designated Tavern events when the C&A is operating a licensed cash bar.
Q: Where should I park?
A: There is limited parking in the main lot. When the “Parking Lot Full” sign is out, please use the overflow parking near the river.
Please park thoughtfully, leave room for emergency vehicles, and avoid blocking other vehicles. Accessible parking is available in the main lot. You’re also welcome to briefly stop at Gatehouse to unload passengers and gear before parking in the overflow lot.
Remember to drive slow and watch for goblins running across the road!
